April 13 Baseball Recap

By Isaac Boyd
The Avalon School baseball team started out this week canceling another game Monday, due to heavy rain, The makeup game vs. Spencerville Academy is pending.

Coach Duffy decided to hold indoor workouts instead of regular practice and the team seemed to respond well. “Today’s workout was very strong and a productive session.” Despite being inside, he looks forward to Wednesday’s contest vs. a talented Gaithersburg Trojans team.
In that game, the Black Knights went back and forth with the Trojan’s before falling 7-3. ” Wish we could have kept our cool,” said Duffy. With the weather being nice that should allow them time to go over and fix their mistakes.

On Thursday, Mother Nature kept her promise and gave the Black Knights a beautiful day for an outdoor practice. ” Its awesome, we haven’t had many these this year,” said Duffy. The Black Knights were able to work on the infield issues and pitchers threw bullpens to prepare for upcoming games.

Friday, The Avalon downed a tough St. Anselm’s team 5-0. Pearce Howard, a sophomore, carried the Black Knights with 3 hits, and 3 runs scored. Seniors Tommy Sanchez and Aspen Feldman each had 1 run scored as well.

One day after Friday’s victory, the Black Knights were on the wrong side of the win column with a 5-2 loss to OLBC foe Nova Lions. The Virginia home school team kept Avalon batters off-balance all game and played spectacular defense. “They played quality baseball for seven innings,” said Duffy. “We didn’t take advantage of opportunities given and in the end that cost us a chance to win.”
