Black knights varsity baseball team suffered a tough loss to the Gaithersburg Trojans 7-3 Wednesday at Kelley Park.

Avalon jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Senior Billy Lennox started off the game with a line drive to right field to get on base for a single. Junior Mark Searles followed with another single which the Trojans left fielder bobbled for an error to advance Lennox to third base.

Lennox then scored on senior Tommy Sanchez’s sacrifice fly. After Searles moved to second base and would score on sophomore Pearce Howard’s double.

Gaithersburg wasted no time to get back into the game and scored two runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game at two.

In the top of the third, Lennox started another rally with a single to centerfield. After he advanced to second base, Sanchez hammered a single down third baseline to score Lennox and put Avalon ahead 3-2.

However, the Trojans would take the lead for good on a 2-run, 2-0ut single to give them a 4-3 lead. Gaithersburg would add three more runs in the 6th inning to increase their edge to 7-3.

Sanchez led the Black Knights with 2 RBIs, and pitched 4 innings. Lennox went 2 for 3 at the plate and scored twice and pitched in relief as well. Howard went 1 for 3 with an RBI.

The Black Knights will move on and prepare for a match up with St. Anselm’s on Friday.
