The Maryland Crab Bowl committee invited Avalon football players Rachid Ibrahim and Jacquille Veii last week to their 2012 event.

The all-star game will feature the top high school football talent from the Washington area as they go against the best from Baltimore.  NCAA All-American’s such as University of Florida’s Jelani Jenkins (Good Counsel High School) and West Virginia’s Tavon Austin (Dunbar High School) are alumni of the game.

Running back Rachid Ibrahim powers past a Potomac School defender in McLean, Va. on October 20, 2012, during a game The Avalon School won 30-19.

“I’m very excited to be invited to the game” said Ibrahim.

Ibrahim, Avalon’s all-time leading rusher, finished last season with 17 touchdowns and over 1200 yards rushing.  However, after recently committing to the University of Pittsburg he has second thoughts about playing the bowl.

“I don’t want to risk injury. I have my eyes set on a larger goal now,” he said.

Veii, an NCAA Division I recruit who committed to The University of Maryland, can’t wait to play in the prestigeous contest.

As a junior at Avalon he rushed for over 600 yards and finished the season with 18 touchdowns. He is also one of Avalon’s top defensive players.

Veii is listed as an athlete on the official Crab Bowl roster meaning he will play multiple positions.  He mostly sees himself playing cornerback and safety.

Both athletes mentioned the efforts of coach Ed O’Daniel’s to get them selected in to the game.

Senior Jacquille Veii rushes down the sideline in a game against the Potomac School on October 20, 2012, in McLean, Va.

“He always pushed us harder and harder,” said Ibrahim.

Three former Avalon students have previously played in the Crab Bowl but all three received diplomas from other high schools.  defensive back Joe Rankin graduated from Seneca Valley High in 2008 and plays collegiately at Morgan State, lineman Ronnie Heckman finished at Rockville in 2009 and played a season at Towson, and Louis Young, who was a High School All-American at Good Counsel in 2011, now plays at Georgia Tech.

The Crab bowl will be played December 21, 2012 at 7:30 p.m. at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex.
