Avalon varsity soccer claimed its first victory of the season Thursday against Washington Christian by a score of 2-1. The two goals were scored by Luca Galli and Ryan Thron. Coach Gustavo Gilardi attributed the victory to solid teamwork and a strong defense.
However, he did admit the mid-field could use a bit more polish, and he hopes to fix that before their next game.
Gilardi emphasized conditioning and skill during the pre-season training and usually spends at least 30 minutes on fitness.
The rest of the practice consists of skills training and ends with a full team scrimmage to get the players more comfortable in game situations.
The team has high hopes for this season and expects to do well in their next game against Don Bosco, a home game at Nike Missal Park, on September 27.
